Dear Readers, Harvest time!

Although I miss the blazing sun of summer, the fragrance of freshly cut grass, and the renewing feeling of fecund flowering flora, there's something about autumn I love: the process of hidden renewal. The brilliant orange of falling maple leaves, to the browning of giant sunflower heads as they deliver their scrumptious seeds, I am inspired to pursue those renewing places within myself. In my recent studies of Taoism, I found there is an energy center just below and behind the navel Taoists call the Immortal Fetus. It is the seat of inexhaustible Chi we are all born with. The trick for Taoists is being able to access this energy center, nourish it and grow it into a brand new Immortal Self. The metaphors are infinite for such a concept, but to me, the Taoists have made supreme a concept so missing from the center of Western medical science: The human body has an infinite ability to regenerate and restore itself. Awe inspiring stories abound in medical literature about this ability, yet no real inquiry into this "anomaly" has been seriously undertaken. I believe it's simply because healing and renewal are ironically not in the interests of the healing professions. The perpetrated lie is that if everyone was healthy, they'd be out of a job. This, of course, is nonsense. People always need help and advice, even if they are Superman or Methuselah.

The bottom line is that self-healing techniques (ancient ones at that) are the only valid centerpieces of any healing modality. And, I think this is the true role of doctors: to return self-sufficiency to their "patients." Sure, doctors need to know how to handle emergencies and accidents, and such, but the overall training should be in health self-sufficiency. Only that can truly serve the Hippocratic Oath to "Do No Harm." I like what ancient Chinese people would do--pay their doctors only when they remained healthy. If they got sick, the doctors didn't get paid. No doubt this practice arose from doctors effectively training their patients in the wisdom of maintaining health. If the doctor was a poor trainer, the patient got sick. Nowadays, the only training doctors undertake with their patients is where to get their prescriptions filled, and what not to eat. What about Hydration, Breathing, Meditation, Self-Awareness, Conscious Nourishment, and such vitally important practices, that in most cases are actually scoffed at by most doctors.

Ultimately, I believe the current medical-priesthood-health-by-drugs cartel will collapse quite ungracefully in the face of simple non-delivery. The general public has been losing faith in Medicine steadily for the past several decades, especially since the rise of templated health plans through HMO's and the temptation of drug dependence--that one-pill-instant-results quest. Those health practitioners who acknowledge the ultimate healing power within their clients, and can guide them to realize that power, will be the only ones to survive. Ah, the irony.

F.Y.I. - Interesting Health News Tidbits

Junk food mice...
Awww...no more junk food. Before the Appleton Wisconsin high school replaced their cafeteria's processed foods with wholesome, nutritious food, the school was described as out-of-control. There were weapons violations, student disruptions, and a cop on duty full-time. After the change in school meals, the students were calm, focused, and orderly. There were no more weapons violations, and no suicides, expulsions, dropouts, or drug violations. The new diet and improved behavior has lasted for seven years, and now other schools are changing their meal programs with similar results. Years ago, a science class at Appleton found support for their new diet by conducting a cruel and unusual experiment with three mice. They fed them the junk food that kids in other high schools eat everyday. The mice freaked out. Their behavior was totally different than the three mice in the neighboring cage. The neighboring mice had good karma; they were fed nutritious whole foods and behaved like mice. They slept during the day inside their cardboard tube, played with each other, and acted very mouse-like. The junk food mice, on the other hand, destroyed their cardboard tube, were no longer nocturnal, stopped playing with each other, fought often, and two mice eventually killed the third and ate it. After the three month experiment, the students rehabilitated the two surviving junk food mice with a diet of whole foods. After about three weeks, the mice came around. Sister Luigi Frigo repeats this experiment every year in her second grade class in Cudahy, Wisconsin, but mercifully, for only four days. Even on the first day of junk food, the mice's behavior "changes drastically." They become lazy, antisocial, and nervous. And it still takes the mice about two to three weeks on unprocessed foods to return to normal. One year, the second graders tried to do the experiment again a few months later with the same mice, but this time the animals refused to eat the junk food. [SOURCE STORY]

Medical science gets gutsy...
Our closest friends! Wired magazine has reported on the work of a group of scientists at Imperial College in London, who have studied the human genome and began to interface that information with an actual human being, looking for practical uses of genome knowledge. What they quickly realized is that specifically human organism DNA accounts for only a small percentage of the DNA active within a given person. Why? Over 500 different species of bacteria, mainly in the gut. "The human genome provides only scant information. The discovery of how microbes in the gut can influence the body's responses to disease means that we now need more research into this area," said Jeremy Nicholson, a professor of biological chemistry at Imperial College and leader of the study. Nicholson's colleague, professor Ian Wilson from Astra Zeneca, believes the "human super-organism" concept "could have a huge impact on how we develop drugs, as individuals can have very different responses to drug metabolism and toxicity." Wilson says, "The microbes can influence things such as the pH levels in the gut and the immune response, all of which can have effects on the effectiveness of drugs," Wilson said. Mainstream medical "holism" now includes our most intimate symbiotes... [SOURCE STORY]

While we're driving on dinos...
Lucky cows... Gasoline--can't live with it, can't live without it...but, with the price of it skyrocketing, it's time to review our Efficient Driving Rules while we wait for that affordable fuel cell auto:

  • Avoid idling. If you have to sit in your car for more than one minute, shut off the engine. In cold weather, let the car run for 30 seconds and drive slowly until the engine is warm.
  • Drive smoothly. Slow and even acceleration and braking can improve gas mileage.
  • Reduce your speed. Driving at posted speed limits saves fuel and lives. Use cruise control to maintain your speed.
  • Limit air conditioning, which consumes fuel. At lower speeds, open the windows or sunroof to stay cool. At higher speeds, use the car's fan instead (open windows create drag that reduces mileage).
  • Park in the shade. This minimizes fuel evaporation and helps keep your car cool in summer months.
  • Be weight conscious. Put heavy items in the trunk instead of on a roof rack, which creates drag. And don't carry around items you don't need; for every 100 pounds of weight in your car, fuel economy decreases by one to two percent.
  • Use overdrive if you have it. Once you reach the speed recommended in your owner's manual, overdrive will lower engine speed and reduce fuel consumption.
  • Track your average mileage and have your car checked if the average decreases. To calculate your mileage, note the odometer reading and number of gallons purchased each time you fill up. Divide the number of miles traveled between fill-ups by the number of gallons purchased. [SOURCE STORY]

    Sunshine--WAY better for you...
Let the sunshine in! The story of vitamin D would appear simple. Take in enough sun or drink enough fortified milk to get the recommended daily amount, and you'll have strong bones. Take a supplement, if you want insurance. But recent studies from around the world have revealed that the sunshine vitamin's role in health is far more complex. More than just protecting bone, vitamin D is proving to preserve muscle strength and to give people some protection against deadly diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS), diabetes, and even cancer. Eat the berry...
Camu Camu Camu camu (Mycaria dubia)is a bush that grows in black water rivers, especially in those abandoned courses called "cochas", ecosystems of great social and economic importance for the Amazonian jungle of Peru. The fruit contains powerful phytochemicals with health benefits, including the amino acids serine, valine, and leucine, and more Vitamin C than any other known plant in the world. The camu-camu fruit is approximately 2 centimeters in diameter and has a purplish red skin with a yellow pulp. Camu camu fruit contains 30 to 60 times more Vitamin C than an orange. It has astringent, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, emollient and nutritional properties, and also contains important levels of beta carotene, calcium, iron, niacin, phosphorus, riboflavin and thiamin. Honesty: the best of all the lost arts....
Mmmmm... As pre-teen and teenagers, we often marveled at the ease with which it is possible to create a false impression with others. Later in life, these minor "white manipulations" usually caught up with us, resulting in a "come to Jesus" moment of repentance or confession. Joan Borysenko writes in her book Guilt is the Teacher, Love is the Lesson (Warner Books, Inc., 1990), that researcher James Pennebaker studied health benefits of confession. He discovered that criminals who confessed to lie detector technicians were often so grateful for the relief they felt after "getting it all out," that they sent birthday, holiday and thank you cards to the polygraph personnel who heard their stories. Pennebaker recounted the story of one miserable man who embezzled money from the bank where he worked. He was tormented by guilt for six months, during which time he suffered from a steady stream of colds, flus, and other illnesses. When he was finally called in for a lie detector test, he confessed to the crime. For the first time in months he felt relaxed and at peace, even though, because of his confession, he would likely go to prison. His secret literally made him sick. A related common source of stress comes from wasting time and energy struggling with things that are not in our control. To limit this source of stress, learn to recognize the things that are not in your control--let them go, and shift your focus to things that you actually can control or influence about an unwanted condition or situation in life. A simple way to remember this advice is the Serenity Prayer: Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
