Hello, Vibrant Reader!
Sunflowers are so great! This one is a volunteer--we have no idea how the seed was planted, but it rose up magnificently about 9 feet, bowing to the East to greet the rising sun. It's a great reminder to greet the day with a flowering spirit.
I went to see a soccer game starring my 10-year old niece, Lydia. It was her birthday week, too, and she was my sleepover guest for the weekend, along with her brother Max and older sister, Madeline. Although her soccer team seemed to be outgunned by a bigger, faster opponent, it was so fun to see how hard they all tried, and how excited everyone was on the field and along the sidelines.
While Max was visiting, it must have seemed to him like spending a whole lot of time in a library, or on some sort of retreat. His parents keep him moving constantly from one planned activity to another, and I was simply happy to have him here. We had no plans, no intense activities, and just generally the volume was definitely turn down from what he was used to. So, I wasn't surprised to hear, "Auntie, I'm BORED." My tendency was to immediately find something for him to engage in, but I decided to let him just circulate on his own, and soon, he was playing a game with his big sister, and seemed content.
It got me thinking about boredom, and how it sometimes happens to me, even though I may be busy doing any number of things. Boredom can apparently occur either with or without activity. As quoted in a great short article on the subject on the Emotional Freedom Technique website: "The brain is always adjusting to new stimuli," says Augustin de la Peņa, a psychophysiologist who has studied boredom for 30 years. "Once the brain has seen something new a few times,it no longer finds it interesting. The brain's ante for stimulation is always being upped, just as a drug addict needs larger and larger doses to get high."
It does often seem that boredom is really a "jones" for more and more stimulation. Perhaps, by changing the intent behind the activity or non-activity we are doing, a new and interesting angle may pop up, and wha-la, no more boredom. For example, bored with cleaning the kitchen? What is the intent? Is it just to "get the chore done?" How about changing it to, "While I'm cleaning the kitchen, I'll look to see how I can improve the kitchen for my overall goal of creating a beautiful home." I think perhaps it's not so much the activity that is boring, it's the intention that is.
