Last month I had the pleasure of meeting Leonor Provan at the Alternatives for Special Kids conference in Irvine, California. Lenora, "Leo" as others fondly call her, is the parent of a special needs child, Lawrence, a handsome 8-year-old boy with both Autism and Cerebral Palsy. Leo's passion and zest for learning--a dark beauty, born in Canada and raised in Chile, married to an Englishman, and now residing in Louisville, Kentucky--took me. Whenever Leo was in a room, listening to a practitioner, taking notes a la rigueur, or sharing her own experiences in the healing process of her son, there always was the burning light of hope and possibility. Now consider, this is a mother whose son at 6 years of age was unable to walk or feed himself, who now at 8 has said a few words, but has never repeated them, although continously verbalizing and experiencing with new sounds. Yet, Leo embraces each day with a thirst and desire to provide her son what he needs to heal himself.
Leo shared that what it takes is patience and the willingness to investigate all possibilities. Because all of us are individuals, what works for one person may not work for another, so the process takes time and consistent effort working towards the highest possible outcome. When as parents, Leo and Rolf chose to address the whole being--body, mind and spirit-- progress began to present itself more consistently and more quickly. Leo states, "What Lawrence has achieved without the assistance of pharmaceuticals or 'traditional' physical or occupational therapy over the course of the last two years is amazing."
During Lawrence's first 4 years of life, he hated laying on his stomach, couldn't sit up, and couldn't feed himself. They began him walking with a walker and braces, but developmentally progress was slow.
After an introduction to ABA (Adaptive Behavior Analysis) with BIFAC, an agency out of Lexington, Kentucky, progress for Lawrence entered a new level. They introduced her to Estin & Goodchild Neurodevelopmental Consultants. Their approach was to address, in proper sequence, functional movements, sensory activities and intellectual stimulation in a way that allowed Lawrence to fill in the gaps with what was missed earlier on in his growth and development. Out of this new beginning, a basement was converted into a "wellness center"--a place where daily Lawrence and his Mommy could work through a series of exercises designed to address the whole body. Things like full body massage, sensory stimulation with smell and texture, art projects; this combined with the regular chiropractic care from Oklahaven Children's Chiropractic Center and Kentuckiana Children Center, and a focus on organic and home made foods, has brought a whole range of possibilities into their lives.
Out of this wellness center a seed was planted, "A Ray of Hope," Leo's project for the future. Her dream is to help other mothers help their children in the same way she has learned to over time. The center will begin in her basement, where it all began for Lawrence. This is a story about people coming together with a common passion and a shared vision. That vision to make a difference in children's lives by restoring them back to health, and bringing back the life force in them, so they can have a better quality of life.
It is also a story about parents who refused to label their child with a symptom, and who embrace the idea of healing; giving the body what it needs to heal itself. By design this is how we all started out. Why things are the way that they are is the mystery. But the mystery dissolves when we step into living as a spiritual being, where all things, people and experiences are an opportunity to know God.
In vibrant health,
