Dear Readers,

Marlene Today I share a story with a message, this message I have been asked to communicate to anyone--anyone with a loved one, a community, a fellowship, a place where two or more gather. This message is for each of you, from Marlene.

Marlene at the age of 59 was diagnosed with uterine cancer. She had her uterus removed; and then preceded with 28 radiation treatments. Marlene is 4'11" tall, 103 pounds, a wife, mother of two and grandmother of four.

How I met Marlene hardly matters--it was just over a phone line, someone asked me to call a woman in distress. We could not have been further apart--me in Oregon, she in New York--all the same, we touched each other's lives for this one reason, and that is her message.

Marlene knew the radiation was hurting her, but she felt cured after her uterus was removed. In her mind, she was once again healthy; ready to be there for her family and especially for her four grandchildren--the light of this tiny, caring woman's world.

Shortly after the 28 radiation treatments, and in fact during the treatments, Marlene could feel her energy and wellness diminishing. She knew, her higher self knew, these treatment were not the right thing. Yet, she continued because the doctor insisted on it, and her husband and children felt it was the right treatment.

Marlene now has a condition called radiation enteritis, a radiation-induced intestinal injury. Lack of clinical knowledge for the proper dosage of radiation is responsible for this type of injury. Instances of radiation enteritis are increasing, and it has been estimated to occur in 5-15% of patients receiving abdominal or pelvic radiotherapy. Incidences are expected to continue increasing.

Marlene's life now revolves around her pain--excruciating moment-by-moment pain--that medication, nor other treatment resolve. The combination of acute and chronic radiation injury can result in varying degrees if inflammation, thickening, collagen deposition, and fibrosis of the bowel, as well as impairment of mucosal and motor function. In Marlene's world this translates into the inability to eat, or drink even very little water. To move her little body is painful, and her thoughts focus on, Why me… And, Why did I not listen to my own knowing, my own understanding of what my body needed.

Miracles! The sharing of Marlene's story is not to place blame, only to raise awareness of the kinds of treatments used to combat cancer and their possible downside. Marlene has shared a hundred times with me over the last two weeks that she only wants people to know her story--to have this awareness, this information, before a decision is made regarding radiation treatment, its duration and dosage.

Marlene knows, that if she is to have a healing of this condition, it will be outside the norm of normal healing--something we call a miracle. Yet miracles happen everyday. My request is to place Marlene on your prayer list requesting a healing of the physical and emotional body. This is all there is to do, other then carry this story with you and remember it. All of us will at some point have a loved one, business associate, neighbor or friend with a C diagnosis. Remember Marlene's story, and share the story. It is important.

In vibrant health,

F.Y.I. - Interesting Health News Tidbits

Sleep deprivation in America...
Researchers figure that most adults need at least seven to eight hours of sleep a night, and children need even more. But a 2002 poll by the National Sleep Foundation found that 70 percent of American adults get less than eight hours, and 40 percent sleep less than seven hours a night. The poll also found that more than one third of respondents experienced symptoms of insomnia nearly every night. The National Center on Sleep Disorders Research estimates that as many as 70 million people in the United States suffer from sleep problems. And another 30 million Americans suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness caused by inadequate sleep. Hunt and other researchers blame the country's swelling sleep debt on a combination of factors from increasing life pressures to the Internet, which allows users to shop, surf the Web, or e-mail any time of the day or night. "A lot of this has to do with the way our society has evolved," says Dr. David M. Rapoport, medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at New York University. "We are a very sleep-deprived society." That's not just a personal issue, but a public-health one, too. Researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and the Obesity Research Center found last year that the less participants slept each night, the more likely they were to become obese. Subjects between the ages of 32 and 59 who slept four hours or less per night, for example, were 73 percent more likely to be obese than those who slept between seven and nine hours each night. Researchers now believe that shortened sleep cycles are associated with decreased secretion of the hunger-suppressing hormone leptin, which can prompt the sleep-deprived to consume as many as 1,000 calories more per day (particularly sweets and salty carbohydrates). People who sleep less also produce less insulin, which helps moderate blood-sugar levels. A lack of sleep can also endanger others. Approximately 100,000 traffic accidents (1,500 of them fatal) a year are sleep related. The government estimates that sleep-related problems also add $16 billion to the nation's health-care bill, including medications and health-care services. And U.S. consumers are spending an estimated $84 million or more per year on over-the-counter medication, according to an analysis published in the journal Sleep and Breathing in 2002. FULL ARTICLE

Teens toss toxic touch-ups...
Young women in California and Montana are taking on the $35 billion cosmetics industry one eyeliner at a time. Their national campaign to promote safe cosmetics is applying idealism and energy to educate girls--and boys--about phthalates, which health advocates warn are carcinogenic, and other toxins in nail polish, shampoos, hair dyes and facial cleansers. In Marin County, Calif., and in Missoula, Mont., the advocates want their peers to read cosmetic labels, use fewer beauty products and take a closer look at those colorful tubes in their makeup bags. They talk of healthy cosmetic parties and peppering their local schools and stores with Operation Beauty Drop bins to encourage consumers to toss questionable products. And they are working to learn what ingredients can potentially cause cancer, birth defects and reproductive harm. "This campaign has made me more aware of the things that I'm putting into my body," said Taylor Lorenz, a 15-year-old Marin girl who said she began using mascara, eye shadow and foundation at age 12. "I never thought about what was in cosmetics, but now if I can find a better alternative, I'm definitely interested in it." A study done five years ago by the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan linked phthalates to early puberty in girls. Harvard University researchers found in 2002 and 2003 that the chemicals can decrease sperm counts in men. And experts with several environmental groups say phthalates disrupt hormone function and may contribute to rising cases of uterine problems in women, testicular cancer in men and infertility in both sexes. Sasha Hoffman, a 17-year-old member of the Marin group and the reigning Miss India America Teen, will raise the issue when she competes in April for the Miss India World title. Hoffman, who has been modeling since she was 5 and entering pageants since age 14, admits to the power of makeup in winning the crowns, but not without worry. "It's a lot of makeup to pack on," she said. "I'm constantly wearing way too much makeup, but you get paid to do it so we have to. I try not to wear any makeup in my spare time to let my face recover." FULL ARTICLE | RELATED

Americans are living longer than ever before--an average of 77.6 years, and the life expectancy of men is drawing closer to that of women, according to government statistics released this month. Death rates from conditions such as heart disease and cancer appear to be declining, while those from others, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, have risen slightly. The report, released by the government's National Center for Health Statistics, is based on more than 2.4 million death certificates issued in 2003, the latest year for which figures are available. The number represents about 93% of all certificates. The statistics revealed that life expectancy had increased by nearly four months from the 2002 figure of 77.3 years. The gap between women and men narrowed slightly, from 5.4 years in 2002 to 5.3 years in 2003, continuing an equalizing trend that has been observed since 1979. The report did not reveal the reasons for mortality changes, said Bob Anderson, chief of the center's mortality statistics branch, who oversaw the study. A large part of the narrowing gap between men and women could be attributable to differences in deaths from heart disease, which with lung cancer accounts for more than half of all deaths in the U.S. each year. "Men are making better progress with respect to heart disease than are women," Anderson said. FULL ARTICLE

Ancient superfood...
Maca is a perennial that grows between 13,000 and 14,500 feet above sea level in the high Andean plateaus of Peru. Its tuberous roots resemble those of its relative the radish. To Andean Indians, maca is a highly valuable commodity. The sweet, spicy dried root is considered a delicacy. It is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and iron, and contains trace minerals, including zinc, iodine, copper, selenium, bismuth, manganese and silica, as well as B vitamins. It also contains four alkaloids proven in scientific investigation to nourish the endocrine glands, including the reproductive system of men and women. Maca's history as a powerful strength and stamina enhancer and libido-fertility herb stretches back well over five hundred years. Maca is a powerful adaptogen, which means it has the ability to balance and stabilize the body's systems. Maca can raise low blood pressure AND lower high blood pressure. Adaptogens also boost immunity and harmonize the body's overall vitality. Rather than addressing a specific symptom, adaptogens are used to improve the overall adaptability of the whole system. During the height of the Incan Empire, legend has it that Incan warriors would consume maca before entering into battle. This would make them fiercely strong. But after conquering a city the Incan soldiers were prohibited from using maca, to protect the conquered women from their powerful sexual impulses. Thus from as far back as five hundred years ago, maca's reputation for enhancing strength, libido and fertility was already well established in Peru. Archeological evidence has been found, that Maca was domesticated over 2000 years ago by the predecessors of the Incas and primitive cultivars of Maca were even found in places dating back to 1600 years before Christ. Top ten modern superfoods...
Popular writer and M.D., Dr. Nicholas Perricone, has announced his picks for the ten best "superfoods." A super food will enhance the immune system, supply vital nutrients, protect against environmental toxins, and vitalize and strengthen the body:
1. Açai (ah-sigh-ee) or Goji Juice: These are nature's energy and biggest antioxidant fruits. They contain 10 to 30 times more than most other fruits or vegetables. Açai is a little berry, grown in the rainforests of Brazil, is high in antioxidants having ten times more antioxidants than red grapes and ten to thirty times the antioxidants in red wine.
2. The Allium Family: Garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, shallots and chives. These common foods contain flavonoids that unleash glutathione, a powerful tripeptide to boost your liver's ability to function better.
3. Barley: An ancient grain for modern times. Have it for breakfast. Use it in soups and stews. Try it as a rice or risotto substitute with dinner. Barley adds fiber to your diet and helps metabolize fats, cholesterol and carbohydrates. Plus it lowers blood cholesterol.
4. Green Foods: Including cereal grasses, spirulina, chlorella and blue-green algae. All of the foods in this group have healing effects on cholesterol, blood pressure, immune response and cancer prevention because they have high concentrations of chlorophyll.
5. Buckwheat: A seed and grain that surpasses rice, wheat and corn on benefits for your body. Buckwheat is low on the glycemic scale, which helps keep your blood sugar stable. It has a nutty taste and is higher in protein than rice, wheat, millet or corn so it helps lower hypertension. Plus, it is higher in essential amino acids and contains no gluten to trigger allergies or celiac disease.
6. Beans and Lentils: Common beans (kidney, black, pinto and navy), chickpeas (garbanzo), dried peas and lentils. They are rich in phytochemicals so they are excellent as anti-aging agents. They are a good source of potassium to lower blood pressure and prevent stroke. They provide a good source of folic acid to prevent heart disease and have strong anti-inflammatory properties. To aid digestion, use a good enzyme formula.
7. Hot Peppers: From the sweet green and red bell peppers to the five-alarm habaneros and high BTU cayenne, each of these peppers contains capsicum or compounds call capsaicinoids. They can help with headaches, provide arthritis relief, soothe your sinuses, act as an anti-inflammatory, relieve gastric distress and studies show they may actually prevent the growth of certain cancers.
8. Nuts and Seeds: Eat raw, unsalted nuts like walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts, or try pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Organic nuts and seeds are always preferable. They will help reduce risks of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, control your weight, relieve hunger pangs between meals and reduce visible sag lines. Of course, they should be eaten in moderation. It's better to eat a small handful regularly than to go on large binges.
9. Sprouts: Try alfalfa, radish, broccoli, clover, mung, onion and other kinds of sprouts. Make your own or buy them at the supermarket. They contain rich, live enzymes and loads of phytonutrients.
10. Yogurt and Kefir: (also sauerkraut, miso, tofu, and other fermented foods). These are probiotic foods that help the body fight off infections and foster the growth of "good bacteria" unlike their counterparts, antibiotics, which kill off both good and bad bacteria leaving your body at more risk. Probiotics help to minimize chronic inflammation, increase nutrient absorption, improve and normalize your immune system; and, can even help with autoimmune challenges like asthma, eczema and Crohn's disease. Let's see...
The most common myth about eyesight is that the quality of your vision is determined only by the shape of the eye--that is, if your eyes are the "correct" shape, you'll have clear vision for life. And if they're misshapen or distorted, you'll suffer vision problems. But research has shown that the key to your ability to see clearly is NOT the shape of your eye, nor is it the strength of your eye muscles. In fact, your eyes are actually 200 times stronger than they need to be, and they already contain all the muscles you need to focus with ease and clarity. The key to your ability to focus and see objects at all distances clearly is the flexibility of the muscles around your eye and your lens. When you relieve tension and rigidity in and around your eye muscles--the lens, the muscles and ligaments that surround the eye, and the muscles that squeeze and move the eyes--an incredible thing happens. All the parts of your visual system work together and function in harmony, bringing the world into focus naturally. MORE INFO
